How to Hold a Crochet Hook

How to Hold a Crochet Hook

I’m starting to become a little insecure about how to hold a crochet hook. It seems as though everyone around me holds it one way and I the other. Can you relate or am I the lone wolf here.

In fact, I recently watched a youtube video where the gal was demonstrating both techniques and she made some sort of comment about my chosen grip being awkward. Awkward? It doesn’t feel awkward to me. If anything, her grip is awkward. But apparently not to most of my friends and family!

20+ years ago my grandmother taught my twin sister, my mother and I how to crochet. And it’s engraved on my brain that the way I hold my hook is “the right way”. Really, I remember her saying there was a right and wrong way. As a new hooker, I wanted to do it right, so I chose my grip.

Now, I wonder, “Have I been wrong all these years?” Most crocheters these days say that either way is right. But do they really believe that or are they just appeasing people like me?

Case in point, I went to a knitters and crocheters group the other day and one of the gals was staring at me while I crocheted. Then, she and my sister started talking about how I hold the crochet hook…as if I was some sort of alien. “Hello,” I thought, “I’m right here in the room.”

So, based on their conversation, it should come as no surprise that Yarnovator (my twin sister) and I each hold the crochet hook differently. It was shocking to me when I recently found out that one of us holds it from beneath like a pencil and the other holds it overhand like a knife. It seems strange to me that we are similar in so many ways yet different here, on a matter of technique.

how to hold a crochet hook

And what about my mother? After all, she was there when my grandmother taught us “right from wrong”. She’s apparently not picking sides because she holds the crochet hook both ways. Literally…for every stitch she holds it both ways. She starts out her stitch holding the crochet hook like a pencil, then ends the stitch holding it like a knife! I have to admit, I’ve never seen anyone crochet quite like that. She definitely has both bases covered.

How to Hold a Crochet Hook – The Conclusion

So, what will I do about how to hold a crochet hook? Will I change my technique to blend in with the crowd or band together with others who crochet like me and start a crusade? I think I’ll just turn on the tv and work on my next project and crochet the way I know to be the right way.

Hard Hat Mining Set

Hard Hat Mining Set – A Blast to Play With

Hard Hat

The hard hat and mining set is the perfect toy to create an explosion. Crochet fire on a single stick of dynamite and throw it in a hole for a little kapow. Or set off a whole stack of dynamite with a blasting box to create a BIG BANG!

Take your imagination deep within the earth building mines to reach diamonds, gold, gems and other precious metals. Or blast through layers of rock quarrying granite and other beautiful stone.

The hard hat will keep you safe as you blast your way to adventure. Stash your dynamite in the wood crate  and bring it and the blasting box along for the big jobs.

This is one hard hat and mining set you’re gonna love to crochet because this one pattern will work for all the kids (baby to adult women)!

The hard hat pattern is One Size Fits All because there’s an adjustable strap inside (just like real hard hats). Simply make the strap tighter (with use of a button) and it will fit anybody’s head (baby, toddler, child, tween, teen, adult women). Add the light, and your projects are immediately illuminated.

The dynamite is a breeze to whip up. Make a couple sticks to carry in your pocket or crochet a bunch and strap them together for bigger jobs. This pattern comes with instructions to make a wick for a single stick or blasting cap and wire to attach a bunch of dynamite to a blasting box.

The blasting box will help you get the big jobs done faster. The “plunger handle” really moves! You can pull up and down on the handle to simulate a big blast! The sides of the box are crocheted with a wavy pattern to simulate wood grain. There’s a strap on top so you can carry the box to your blast sight. Instructions for the wire, twistable wing nuts and blasting cap are also included.

The wood dynamite crate will help store your dynamite when you’re heading to the job site. This pattern calls for two shades of brown to really get an authentic wood grain look. Crochet a couple of hinges and some lettering to bring the box to life. Create some cord handles and you can carry your explosives anywhere.

Aviator Hat for Baby FREE Crochet Pattern

Aviator Hat for Baby

Aviator Hat BabyThe Aviator hat is stylish and fun. Oh, and put it on a baby and it’s just stinkin’ cute! The aviator hat is sometimes referred to as a “bomber hat” or “flying hat”. In the crochet world we have also seen it called “hat with ear flaps”, which is a pretty accurate description.

There are several elements that make the aviator hat distinctive. The original flying hat was made of a leather exterior and wool interior – a flap of the cap was tacked just above the forehead. Long ear flaps held radios at the ears. The  hat was often paired with flying goggles and a scarf. We’ve simulated all of these elements with yarn!

Aviator Hat for Baby- FREE Crochet Pattern

This aviator hat is a perfect gift for your little flyer or for a much needed baby gift. The hat fits newborns and is perfect for little boys and little girls. The pattern calls for crocheting in the round. Since you crochet with two strands at once, this newborn hat will stitch up quick and easy.
